Learn about osteopathy

The term 'osteopath' is a protected title, meaning not just anyone can call themselves an osteopath. Osteopaths in the UK must study for a minimum of four years, train to degree level gaining either a Bachelor's (BSc) or Masters of Science (MSc) and complete a medical degree course that is approved by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Much like medical doctors, osteopaths learn about subjects such as anatomy, physiology and pathology as well as learning structural techniques such as physical manipulation, massage, sports osteopathy and rehabilitation. Courses are a combination of academic, research and over 1,000 hours of patient-facing clinical training.

Osteopathy is a regulated profession and osteopaths must register each year with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Osteopaths must adhere to a code of conduct set out by their governing body, keep up with practice standards and complete a minimum number of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours each year, this ensures that our knowledge and training is up to date and that we are safe and effective!

According to Mayo Clinic, “Osteopathic manipulative medicine is a unique approach to your care that blends the science and art of medicine, focusing on identifying and treating the cause of your pain, not just the symptoms”. Because osteopaths are trained to identify and address the root cause of an issue and not just treat the symptoms, my treatments are comprised of a whole person approach, tailored to your specific needs rather than following a fixed routine. I have over 10 years of experience treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, from recovery of acute sports injuries right through to working on chronic conditions as well as providing some much needed stress relief!

During the course of your treatment I will be working to reduce your pain and improve your joint mobility and overall flexibility. I will also look into factors that may be causing or prolonging your pain such as your lifestyle, posture and even your mental and emotional well being. Yes, stress can cause physical symptoms such as muscle aches and pains too!

Osteopaths are taught that good overall health is comprised of more than just your physical health and my holistic approach reflects this, so rest assured, you're in safe hands!
